That you Andrew. My wife asks, did China at any stage have actual slaves, like the degrees in USA? Thank you for,a thought provoking essay on how the past may be manipulated and used.

Richard, slavery has a long history in many societies, including China. I believe that China's experience with slaves is different than America's. America's slavery was predominantly racial. China's slavery was predominantly martial (prisoners captured and taken in battle) and also due to poverty. Lack of freedom of control and movement and exploitation were integral to both, though I believe that the demonization and consideration of an entire race as less than human and therefore worthy of slavery for that reason alone was a hallmark of America and not China.
