This is one of the best overviews of the US/China media fear control relationship. We no longer wait to analyze the situation before most of America (or any country for that matter) screams, "Shoot it down!" egged on by the media.

My guess is that alien races are hanging around on the perimeter of our space surveillance capability with every technology the Earth needs to resolve our problems, but are just waiting for humanity to evolve enough to not shoot first, ask questions later. Good luck with that.

Kathy, you are correct whether speaking about foreign relations or domestic issues. Dialogue and thought have been replaced with (sometimes calculated) knee-jerk reaction. The aliens likely do have a long wait ahead of them. Hope they are patient.

Andrew, A wonderful and timely submission. I'm curious if there is any talk, (government, media, think-tank, podcast, or otherwise) from the perspective of the use of fear to control the narrative disseminated to the general population of both Chinese and US citizens. It seems to me the institutions in both countries greatly benefit from the ability to keep their citizens fearful of the other. It seems cooperation and progress are the stated but not the official goals.

Jim, I see fear as a strong narrative feature of significant portions of U.S. government and media in particular, and unfortunately fear feeds on itself and leads to growing acceptance of authoritarianism here. There are excellent podcasts and news sources that bring balance and nuance to the China conversation; however, they do not have the reach of the mainstream and social media platforms. As for China, there is insecurity-driven confidence (some well placed and some not), and I sense that they are operating more from a feeling of aggrievement and being picked on than fear. This being said, if you can demonize the other (whether because they are evil, weak or to be feared), all the better for promoting the domestic agenda.
