Thank you, Andrew, for this most detailed and informative analysis of recent strategies on the part of China's governmemnt and the American response. One point that might be good to note is that in a number of BRI projects, China's deal with these countries has left them with crippling debt. additionally, it is my understanding that in the projects in these developing nations., Chinse workers are sent to implement then, rather than engaging much of the local population. Please do not hesitate to correct what I have written as you see appropriate. best wishes, Janet Baker
Janet, you are correct. A number of projects have either resulted in great debt burdens and/or significant cost overruns and/or non-completion. Use of Chinese labor is also common. All of this being said, on balance it is my impression that many of the projects are well received in the host countries (by the leaders if not always the populaces) and that Chinese relations are deepening across many areas of the Global South.
Richard, it will take a long time and require a real conversation for Americans to look back at history critically and to separate politics from a deeper understanding of China, the Chinese people, and even (to some extent) the Chinese government.
I appreciate the interesting perspective that your postings present. Well done, Andrew.
