Lots of friendly interactions during a time when many Chinese people had never seen or met a foreigner before. It is also a reminder of how dramatically circumstances have changed in forty years.
Janet, Mike also mentioned to me how his Nikon with a giant lens was also a conversation point for many who had not seen such a big camera before, let alone had their photos taken by a foreigner.
Indeed! Another popular thing at the time was foreigners who would shoot pictures with a Polaroid camera and then give the instant photo to the subject as a token gift.
